Get to Know Your 2025–26 Student Reps! ASUWB Director of Finance

Director of Finance
Munder Abukhder (he/him)
Major: Mechanical Engineering

What is your role in ASUWB?

As the Director of Finance, my role involves overseeing all ASUWB finances, maintaining accurate financial records, and serving on/hiring for the SAF, STF (and the soon U-PASS Committee)! I work closely with the Events & Engagement Coordinator when ASUWB is holding events, such as Town Halls. I also work with other ASUWB members whenever their initiatives require funding – which is most of the time! Overall, my goal is to make sure our funding processes are transparent, efficient, and supportive of student-led ideas across campus.

What got you interested in being involved with ASUWB and what are you looking forward to?

After serving on Club Council for two years, I realized the significance of funding decisions, and how they shape the student’s experience. From supporting clubs and their events, to making campus more engaging and inclusive, I felt passionate about funding. Stepping into the Director of Finance role felt like a natural next step. I am also determined to make a tangible impact on campus by improving how student resources are used. Prior to joining Student Government, I honestly had no idea how many resources and opportunities are available to students. That is exactly why it is a priority of mine to improve their transparency and awareness, so that every student knows how to access the tools they need to succeed.

According to the UWB Student Affairs website, the SAF Committee is responsible for allocating $2.2 million to support student services each academic year. Can you briefly explain what these services and programs consist of? How many people are on the committee, and are there specific roles for each member?

The SAF Committee allocates around $2.2 million every year to fund programs and services that directly enhance student life. That includes things like Student Engagement and Activities (Club Council, Campus Events Board, Student Media, ASUWB), supporting ARC operations and Intramural Sports, the Diversity Center, the HaWRC (Health and Resource Center), Veteran Resources, Student Legal Services, Counseling Services, Peer Coaches, and much more! Essentially, anything that enriches the student’s experience outside of the classroom can be supported through SAF. The committee itself is made up of 10 student members (including an ASUWB representative), and a few faculty and staff advisors. Each member has an equal vote, but there are also specific roles like the Chair, who leads meetings and ensures discussions stay fair and productive, and the Vice Chair, who helps organize proposal reviews and communication. Everyone on the committee plays an important role in making sure the funds are allocated equitably and transparently.

What skills and experiences can students gain from being on the SAF or STF committee? Do students need prior experience in finance or budgeting to apply?

You definitely do not need any prior finance or budgeting experience to join SAF or STF – we encourage students from all backgrounds to apply! What matters most is being curious, fair, and willing to learn. These committees teach you real-world skills like evaluating funding proposals, making budget decisions, and understanding how student fees are used to improve campus life. Through this, you will also gain experience in teamwork, public speaking, and decision-making. Plus, it’s a paid position! Members receive a quarterly stipend and valuable resume experience, while helping create a better experience for all students at UWB.

Is there another important fund or service that you’d like to inform students about?

Yes, absolutely! SAEF (Student Academic Enhancement Fund) is a generally underutilized fund that supports students in pursuing academic and professional development opportunities outside the classroom – such as attending conferences, workshops, and competitions. Many students don’t realize they can apply individually (not just through a club), for up to $1,500 in funding. This could be used to help cover costs like travel, registration, and materials. It’s a great resource for anyone looking to expand their learning and represent UWB beyond our campus.
